Students Brew Confidence and Skills at Washington Elementary

At Washington Elementary, students in the Bilingual STEP program are putting their learning into action through a new student-led coffee cart! Each month, third and fourth graders take orders from staff, create order codes, and help prepare and deliver drinks to staff, building math, communication, language, and life skills along the way. The idea grew from the STEP classroom teacher, Annika Newell; Jennifer Rico, social worker; Hannah Vis, speech-language pathologist; and Nora Mizell, occupational therapist, all coming together over the summer to think creatively about new ways to more deeply engage students in their learning. With generous support from the Washington PTA, the coffee cart is now up and running and giving students an opportunity to build confidence, practice important skills, and take pride in a school project of their own.
